Tube: North Greenwich Ask any skinny-jeaned boy in shoreditch which band theyd most like to be in, and theyd prob ably s ay ac cl a i me d Brooklyn hipsters MGMT. After all, theyve got the fame, the fortune, the girls, the psyche- delic headbands... But not simon OConnor, lead guitarist of Amazing Baby. And he has played in many bands with the MGMT boys. Dude, I love Andrew and Ben, drawled the New Yorker of MGMTs Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, over beers inside his campervan at Latitude festival. I lived with Andrew for five years, hes my best friend in the world and I was in, like, nine bands with him. I even played a couple of shows with them when they were called The Management. But they love pop and I... want to make peoples ears bleed. As far as the Brooklyn scene goes, he continues, its more about friendship and respect than what bands sound like. People making good music become friends because you dont make friends with anyone who makes bad music. OConnor formed Amazing Baby with singer Will Roan last January. They stuck some songs on Myspace just for friends and had released a fiery album, Rewild, by June this year. OConnor says his zip code isnt an influence, and dont mention Wesleyan, the university the counts santigold, Chairlift and MGMT among its alumni. Were not a Wesleyan band, he says. Im the only one who went there! But Andrew and I were in some horribly violent porn-rock bands there, and the riffs from those bands are in a lot of MGMT songs!
