Environmental health officers shut down the American-style diner in Bedford Place, Covent Garden, after customers complained of mice scuttling around while they ate. The restaurant was littered with mice droppings and dead cockroaches and was covered in grime, City of Westminster Magistrates Court heard. Prosecutor Felicia Davy said the res- taurant, one of 45 owned by the company, was inspected on 2 July last year follow- ing complaints from diners. The premises were closed for six days, but were allowed to reopen after TGI mounted a 66,000 clean-up. However, a follow-up investigation by Westminster City Council revealed staff had been aware of the problem for more than a year but had not acted. Ms Davy said: When Westminster inspected they found the floors and the kitchen were filthy and a pile of cock- roaches was found in a drawer. There were also two, albeit unconfirmed, cases of food poisoning reported by customers who had eaten there. She said council pest control officers were sent in and 65 mice were caught. The company admitted six charges of breaching food hygiene laws. District judge Purdy imposed the maximum penalty of 5,000 per charge. A TGI spokesman said today: We take this regrettable situation extremely seriously. The health and safety of all our guests is of the utmost priority to us, and we are deeply disappointed by the incident. by geoRgina littlejohn Thank Goodness Its Fined: the TGI Fridays restaurant in Bedford Place Pests: 30 mice were found in dining area H index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html28.html29.html30.html31.html32.html33.html34.html35.html36.html37.html38.html39.html40.html41.html42.html43.html
