Tube: Farringdon Self-doubt is an endearing quality in a comedy genius and Judd Apatow seems genuine when he says: I always assume nothing I do is going to work. the director of the 40 Year old Virgin and Knocked up, who has also produced and/or written the likes of Superbad and Pineapple express, reckons his phenomenal success is hit-and-miss: Whenever theres a joke I shoot a lot of extra jokes because I assume they wont all be funny. funny People, Apatows latest direc- torial effort, is an embarrassment of riches as one jaw-droppingly profane one-liner follows another. for the 41-year-old non-virgin (hes married to leslie Mann and they have two daughters), its his most heartfelt film to date. the wife and kids are in it, along with best mates Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen. Apatow is all for nepotism. I love it when people work together who know each other so well. A lot of intimate things come through. then theres Rogens character, an aspiring stand-up comic who hooks up with Sandlers superstar, just as a young Apatow wound up writing jokes for big names like Roseanne barr. I couldnt believe the comedians would let me hang out with them, he recalls, but adds the film isnt strict autobiog- raphy. Its more truthful to my psyche than actual events, although there are little details. like when Rogen licks orange juice off a table. I did the same thing when a girl I had a crush on was talking to Adam. daughters Iris and Maude are happy to help out when a script calls for cute kids, but as soon as we get home from work were sucked into a world of Spongebob Squarepants and two girls having fist fights with each other. they havent even expressed an interest in seeing the new film, but then Apatow -- who confesses the things that make me laugh are so terribly offensive -- wouldnt let them, saying he keeps joking that Im going to cut every inappropriate moment out of it... and show them an eight-minute version.
