TELEVISION Filmchoice FILM RATINGS excellent very good good average poor KEY (R)repeat (S)subtitles on text service BBC2 ITV1 Channel 4 Five London Lite Tuesday, 25 August 2009 19 The Day After Tomorrow Film4, 9pm (2004) NOT to be confused with the Joan Baez album of the same name, this is the special effects-laden disaster movie where the worlds weather goes ape. The UK freezes solid in a matter of seconds, LA landmarks are torn to pieces by twisters, and Jake Gyllenhaal, above, stops a tidal wave that is swamping New York by simply shutting a door behind him. Needful Things BBC1, 11.15pm (1993) LELAND GAUNT opens an antique shop in a small New England town, and the townsfolk soon discover that the shop is incredible. It seems to have the very thing that they have been looking for -- and cant do without. But Leland has ulterior motives, to say the least. A passable adaptation of a Stephen King horror, starring Max Von Sydow, above. Speed 2: Cruise Control Film4, 6.30pm (1997) A TERRORIST hacks into a cruise ships guidance system and points it towards an oil tanker. Yep, thats about the size of it. Before the action really gets going, the viewer has to endure scenes of life aboard a cruise ship that rival The Love Boat TV series for schmaltz. Sandra Bullock and Jason Patric, above, star in what surely must be the last in the Speed franchise. Bulletproof Five USA, 9pm (1996) AN UNDERcOVER cop forms an unlikely friendship with a small-time car thief in the hope of nailing a ruthless drug baron.
