TWO men accused of taking part in Britains biggest jewellery robbery were remanded in custody today. Solomun Beyene, 24, and Craig Calderwood, 26, appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates Court in south London. They are accused of conspiring with others to steal jewellery worth 40m from Graff Diamonds in Mayfair on 6 August. The men appeared in the dock flanked by five prison officers amid heightened security at the court. They are also both charged with possessing firearms during the robbery at the prestigious New Bond Street store. Beyene, from St Johns Wood, and Calderwood, of no fixed address, spoke only to confirm their details. One of the suspects was arrested on Wednesday at Freedom bar in Soho. Plain-clothes detectives mingled with drinkers before mak- ing an arrest at about 9.30pm. Calderwood, who has short, red hair, wore a white T-shirt for the 10-minute hearing. Beyene wore a grey, short-sleeved T-shirt and has heavily tattooed forearms. They will appear at Kingston Crown Court on 1 September.
