Sir Patrick Cormack believes the increase should replace the allowances system which plunged Parliament into disrepute. He accepts that his proposed rise from the current salary of 64,766 would run into opposition, but believes it is the best, fairest and cleanest solution to the expenses scandal. Sir Patrick, 70, outlined his plan to the committee on standards in public life, which is conducting an inquiry into MPs pay and expenses. The most effective way of restoring public confidence in Parliament is for there to be a significant increase in members salaries and an abolition of all allowances, save the allowance to pay for staff and a constituency office, he said in his submission dated 29 May. To ensure that members could perform their parliamentary and constituency duties effectively, and have, where necessary, a second home, the salary of members would have to be doubled at least. Overseas aid minister Mike Foster called Sir Patrick out of touch, while Lib-Dem MP Ed Davey said: He must be living on Planet Zog to think that doubling MPs salary would restore public faith. The sound of a thousand ukuleles filled the Royal Albert Hall in one of the most unusual concerts in the festivals 115-year history. Enthusiasts were asked to join in with the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, and 992 played Beethovens Ode To Joy. The programme dedicated to the instrument also included music by The Who, David Bowie and Wagners Ride Of The Valkyries.Stringalong: ukulele players in the Proms audience join in Promsrevellers showlotsofpluck Sebspaydeal delivers a successful Olympics. Locog said Lord Coes pay was increased because of the growing demands on his time as chairman of the organisation: The increased salary level reflects the growing demands placed upon the chair, which will continue to accelerate during the next three years. The highest paid executive of the agency building the Olympic venues is David Higgins, who received a 594,000 package. P ALAN SUGAR has attacked the Governments scandalous record on apprenticeships despite being hired to promote Gordon Browns policies. Lord Sugar demanded that ministers show their commitment to creating more apprenticeships for teenagers. The host of BBCs The Apprentice warned that Britains proud history of helping young people learn a trade had been neglected. His remarks came at a critical time for millions of school-leavers who are facing the highest unemployment rates for a generation and a shortage of university places. Ministers have said they want to create 400,000 apprenticeships by 2020, including 35,000 over the next year. Lord Sugar fronted an advertising campaign to promote the Governments policy. His comments were published in Report, the magazine of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, in March, before he was appointed as government enterprise czar in June.Attack: Alan Sugar Youre like, Im a big movie star and I want to go out with some models but I dont know why that doesnt happen -- TwilighT hunk RobeRt PAttinSon, 23, lefT, says fame isnT quiTe working ouT as planned No bands have anything to say right now -- babyshambles drummer AdAm fiCek is unhappy aT The currenT sTaTe of indie music Brad has a big family and sleeping at work is the only chance he gets -- quentin tARAntino excuses brad piTTs naps on The seT of inglourious basTerds diStRibution HeLPLine: If you have any comments about the distribution of London Lite, ring 020 7651 5276, or email On the Tube JOURNEY PLANNER for the easiest way to get around London visit uk and click on Journey Planner London travel information call 020 7222 1234 24-hours textphone 020 7918 3015 travel alerts receive free real-time travel info on your mobile or email, subscribe at uk/travelalerts for more information on oyster, visit Lu Customer services for inquiries, call 0845 330 9880 between 8am and 8pm daily Congestion charging for payment details call 0845 900 1234 or visit cclondon. com London travelwatch call 020 7505 9000 or visit londontravel Roadwatch Victoria embankment, Holborn: lanes restricted and diversions around northumberland avenue.
