Yet this last in the current series of Who Do You Think You are? proves even the ancestry of Mr average himself connects to extraordinary characters and revealing history. Born into unpromising circum- stances in the mid-19th century and blind from birth, he had the luck to be sent to a special school and became a well-to-do church organist with an impressive house on the Sussex coast. But then the parish magazine records, The circumstances under which the post of organ- ist became vacant are already familiar to our readers, and that strong whiff of scandal was followed by tragedy -- in his third marriage six of Richards 12 children died.
