LITESPORT STEPH TWELL broke down in tears today after crashing out of the 1500m at the World Champi- onships in Berlin. The world junior champion trailed in 12th in her heat in the Olympic Stadium in 4 mins 18.23 secs, almost 15 seconds outside the personal best she set in Monaco on 28 July. Its difficult to remember the race right now. I just did not feel right from the start, said Twell, the first ever athlete to win three successiveEuropeancrosscoun- try titles. I was working harder to fight for a place rather than having my own race. The laps went by without me realising and it was such an elbow fight. Atthebellthegroupjust went and I did not have the response that I normally do. I didnt feel myself. I felt unwell after the race, my stom- ach is not good. Last week Twells coach, Mick Woods, questioned the choice of Portugal for the British teams pre-championship training camp, saying:Theweatherisnt good for endurance athletes. And Twell, who celebrated her 20th birthday yesterday, added: Portugal was tough, I have to admit. My steady training was fine but for some sessions there was no shelter at all. Earlier in the session, Usain Bolt showed no ill effects from his record-breaking heroics on Sunday evening as he cruised into the second round of the 200m. Bolt broke his own 100m world record in Berlin at the weekend with a stunning run of 9.58 secs, taking 0.11 secs off the mark he set in the Olympic final in Beijing. Marlon Devonish, Britains only representative after the withdrawalsof DwainChambers and trials winner Toby Sande- man, also advanced after win- ning his heat in 20.92s. British trio Robert Tobin, Michael Bingham and Martyn Rooney all advanced to the semi- finals of the 400m. 30 Tuesday, 18 August 2009 London Lite TWELLTH FRIGHT IS A TEAR-JERKERBY GEOFF TEATHER Him again: Usain Bolt in todays 200m heat after Sundays heroics Live on BBC2, from 4.45pm Elbowed out: Steph Twell in tears, inset, after coming 12th in her 1500m heat today Stephcries afterdire 1500exit coun-crossEuropeansuccessive try titles. toharderworkingwasI ght for a place rather thanfi having my own race.
