IN&OUTTONIGHT 18 Tuesday, 18 August 2009 London Lite though -- I think we were on the same wavelength so it didnt matter. Id say the date was successful. Were both writers and Ive not dated one before, so we clicked and had lots of talk about. It didnt matter that we didnt have much other than that in common. We went on to a bar afterwards for a few drinks and it was nice to have some time in a more natural environment -- it was a relief to get away from watchful eyes who knew we were on a blind date. We didnt leave the bar until about mid- night and we kissed in the bar. On the night Benjamin said hed like to see me again in the next week or so. I havent been on a second date for a while so that will give me something to write about in my blog. EvErything was perfect on the night and it all went very smoothly. We hit it off immediately and had lots in common. the sushi-making really broke the ice -- there was lots of laughing. We made three different types of rolls, including California and hand rolls. im not a huge sushi fan but thought id keep that to myself as theres nothing worse on a date than someone complaining. For dinner we tried Will he LOVE HESAYS: Single FILEWhat happened when we sent two Lite readers for a class in Japanese cuisine? Benjamin Hall, 27, from notting Hill, chose to date Sarah Finley, also 27, from St albans, as he liked the fact that they are both journalists. We sent them to learn how to make sushi to see if they would develop a taste for each other. I gOt to YO! Sushi about 10 minutes early and he was a little late, which wasnt a good start for a first date. Luckily, Benjamin was immediately very friendly and we got on really well, so first impressions were good in spite of the lateness. We learnt a lot in our sushi class. Our chef, Pog, was very friendly and thorough. We were shown how to make sushi rolls with the ready-cooked rice, rolling them using a special mat -- its actually a lot harder than youd think! Ben was quite flirty from the start, saying things like: Youll have to prepare me sushi another time. I wasnt sure at first whether he might just be a naturally flirty guy, or whether he really meant it. While there was a little banter of this kind while we were making the sushi, it was only afterwards in the restaurant that we got a chance to talk properly. We started chatting about work as we have common ground there -- although I write mainly about dating, while he writes about war and has just got back from Iraq. It was nice to hear about another side of journalism. Were the same age, although we come from rather different backgrounds. I liked that, though -- if you date someone too similar it can get a bit boring. He went to university in America and seems to have grown up all over the world, while Ive been based in Hertfordshire and London most of my life. I think Benjamin likes his big nights out and goes to posh places like Whisky Mist and Mahiki. Ive never been any- where like that and normally prefer meals with friends in restaurants. It didnt put me off that hes into those kinds of places, SHESAYS: Fancy a date with these hotties, courtesy of Lite? Thousands are looking for you at Miya kinda place: Miyajima in Lavender Hill CHEAP DATE miyajima (196 lavender Hill, Battersea, SW11, 020 7223 1144) created the laid-back environment I had been hoping for on a first date. The large communal tables removed the awkward romantic feel of a fine dining restaurant, and replaced it with a relaxed vibe. Neither of us could pass up the chance of trying a Miyajima Juice (2.50) and ordered a second before our meal had even arrived. While we waited for dinner we chatted about the restaurants red interior and matching menus, avoiding embarrassing first-date topics. As a messy eater I rejoiced in the tidy manner in which I could eat my share of Salmon Roll (3.60) and California Roll (4.10) daintily dipping both in soy sauce and fresh wasabi. A sashimi platter (16) plus a bottle of house wine (11.50) took us through the main course with ease. Our date was relaxed, the food delicious and any discomfort disappeared within moments of entering the restaurant.
