When I asked the super- slim singer how she stayed in shape her answer -- skipping -- surprised me. I always thought skipping was an activ- ity more suited to primary school children than pop stars. and Id certainly never have thought that a playground game could give you the sort of figure that Katy flaunts in her sexy, vintage-inspired stage outfits. after a bit of further investigation I discov- ered that boxers often use skipping as a form of training and that Gymbox in Covent Garden offers a 45-minute exercise class devoted entirely to skipping. they reckon you can burn 7 5 0 c a lo r ie s a n ho u r wh i le toning up thigh and calf muscles, triceps, biceps and abs. Boots pharmacist Angela Chalmers answers your health queries. What causes it? Insect bites are puncture wounds or lacerations caused by the likes of midges, gnats, fleas and mosquitoes. When they bite, a form of saliva is released into the area, which usually causes a small lump to develop, and the surrounding area may fill with fluid. Symptoms vary depending on the type of insect and the sensitivity of the person bitten, but most commonly the affected area will become inflamed, itchy and perhaps blister. It should clear within one to two days, but if not, visit your GP. What can I do? You should take precautions to avoid getting bitten in the first instance by covering skin and applying insect repellent to exposed areas. If you are bitten, use a cold compress such as a wet flannel over the affected area to reduce any swelling and discomfort and try not to scratch the bite. To help prevent infection, keep insect bites clean and apply an antiseptic cream. Antihistamine can help ease itching and swelling.
