Thursday, 13 August 2009 London Lite PMs wife goes all a-Twitter in defence of NHS Healthservice savedHawking GORDON BROWN and his wife Sarah have joined a Twitter campaign defending the NHS from withering US attacks. Mrs Brown backed the online fightback by tweeting: #welovetheNHS -- more than we can say after the service was derided by US critics as an evil and Orwellian system that puts a financial cap on the value of human life and refuses to treat the elderly. The Prime Minister threw his weight behind the campaign amid a bitter debate over US president Barack Obamas health care reforms. Republicans and other campaigners in America have warned against the dangers of socialised health care and claim the NHS proves the pitfalls of the Obama plan. Twitter crashed yesterday with the volume of new messages for the #welovetheNHS campaign. Now Mr Brown has used Downing Streets own Twitter site to hit back. The site, which has more than a million followers, posted a message last night which states: PM: NHS often makes the difference between pain and comfort, despair and hope, life and death. Thanks for always being there. Professor stephen Hawking has launched a passionate defence of the NHs days after it was criticised by American republicans. Tube or cab? As much as I love the privacy of a cab, I need to get to places quickly so I do use the Tube, although Im increasingly aware of people observing me on it. Married life or the single life? Married life is brilliant. Im a father now as well. Its almost as if a weight is taken off your shoulders when you get married because you can be yourself and dont have to put on a faade any more. Restaurant or takeaway? I like eating in The Ivy, which sounds pretentious, but both my wife and I just love the food there. Star Stories or The Kevin Bishop Show? I had a brilliant time doing Star Stories, which has a very close place in my heart. However, The Kevin Bishop Show has a few more non-famous characters this series. Premier League or the Ashes? Ive been watching bits of the Ashes as I got so involved when we won in 2005, I literally lost weeks of my life. I met Shane Warne (pictured) once in a pub in Edinburgh, during an Ashes series. Jason Gillespie and Shane gave me tickets, but it was rained off, so we just got drunk. Facebook or Twitter? I dont see why anyone would go on either because they just add to the busy admin of life. I was on Facebook for about two months and then I thought, Im never going to get this time back. Nick DiNeS Jokebox......... IN AN article on 6 August we reported that Menna Richards, Director of BBC Wales, authorised payments totalling 142,000 to a production company owned by her sister. We are happy to clarify that she played no role in that decision and as such has acted properly and in accordance with the BBCs strict conflict of interest policies. We apologise for the error. Menna Richards renowned physicist, 67, who is paralysed by motor neurone disease, said: I wouldnt be here today if it were not for the NHs. I have received a large amount of high- quality treatment. He spoke after receiving the Presidential Medal of freedom from President Barack obama.
