Sir John Scarlett said officers had to protect the UK against terrorism, but stressed they were also committed to human rights and liberal democracy. The Secret Intelligence Service chief spoke out as the Government faced calls for an independent inquiry into possible British complicity in alleged overseas torture by the United States. In the first broadcast interview by a serving head of MI6, Sir John denied that British intelligence services had been compromised by their close relationship with US counterparts. Were an independent service working to our own laws... and to our own values, he told BBC Radio 4. Our officers are as committed to the values and the human rights values of liberal democracy as anybody else. His remarks came as MI5 is being investigated by the police over claims that it colluded with the alleged mistreatment of British resident Binyam Mohamed by US agencies. Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Home Secretary Alan Johnson yesterday admitted they could never eliminate the risk of mistreatment of terror suspects, but said allegations of wrongdoing were taken very seriously. Climate Rush activists dressed as suffragettes chained themselves to railings and planted mini-wind turbines at the Business Secretarys house in Regents Park to protest about the fate of Vestas factory on the Isle of Wight. Lord Mandelson flew back from Corfu to take over the running of the country today as Gordon Brown began his holiday in the Lake District. Merrick Cockell, the Conservative chairman of London Councils, the umbrella body that represents the capitals 33 boroughs, said he is prepared to walk away from national pay bargaining, which sets the pay for 1.6m workers across the country, rather than be forced to sign up to a one per cent wage rise next year. The rise would cost London councils about 1m a year. He said the move could result in London authorities joining the 40 or so other councils that set their own pay and conditions. But Sir Steve Bullock, Labour executive mayor of Lewisham, said London Councils did not have the power to take all 33 councils out of the national pay structure.Bid: Merrick Cockell Its your duty to eat a dessert -- JeRRy haLL, left, gives advice to her calendar girls co-star jill halfpenny after saying all the cast are too thin If you werent royalty I wouldve punched you in the face by now -- grime star Dizzee RaSCaLs friendly warning to prince harry after the royal showed off his hip hop moves Clothes are so uncomfortable.
