They believe the attacks, which left three million britons unable to tweet for up to three hours, could have been a test run for an extortion attempt. Facebook also suffered delays and service problems yesterday. Analysts say a single group or individual could have been to blame -- even a bored teenager in a bedroom. There was speculation in Washington last night that similar attacks on US government websites last month could have been target practice. but there were no reports of any blackmail notes. Twitter founder biz Stone said that yesterdays crash appeared to be a single, massively co-ordinated attack. Facebook, Twitter and Google were together trying to discover who caused the denial of service. It happens when millions of remotely controlled, virus-infected Pcs try to contact a site at once. chase. The robbers leapt into a blue BMW, but abandoned the car in nearby Dover Street after ramming it into a black cab. The men then got into a silver Mercedes and drove off. Witnesses reported seeing a man clutching a pack- age speeding away on a motorbike. It was unclear today precisely what was stolen, but the jewels are thought to be worth millions of pounds. The haul is so big that a stock-take to determine precisely what was taken is expected to last the whole weekend. Witness Rob Cottrell, 30, a recruitment consultant, said: I saw a black guy dressed in a suit being chased by a cab- bie he had crashed into. He fired off a round from a handgun, probably because of the people who were chasing him. In front of him was another car and he was running to catch up with it. He got in and they drove off. The cab driver whose vehicle was rammed said: I jumped out to see the damage and the car kept coming up the pavement, so I skipped over the side to get out of the way because he wasnt going to stop. I was shouting, What are you doing?. I carried on because I didnt see the registration, and got to the end of the road and heard the gunshot. They sped off being chased by all sorts of people from the pub, police, everyone. Claire OReilly, 27, a consultant work- ing in Dover Street, said: Everyone shouted, Get down. Three or four peo- ple were running down the road. I heard guys roaring, Get in, lets go and the people involved sped off. A press officer for Graff was in tears at the scene. A security guard said: No one was hurt and thats the main thing. The two robbers had arrived at the store in a taxi and coolly paid the fare before carrying out the raid. Police are appealing for the taxi driver who took the fare from the men, one white, one black, to get in touch.
