WATFORD manager Malky Mackay could be forgiven for being slightly nervous as he heads into his debut season as a coach -- but he comes with the praise of none other than Sir Alex Ferguson ringing in his ears. Mackay (below), whose Hornets side takeonDoncasterintheseason-opener tomorrow, has just a three-week stint as caretaker boss on his CV after tak- ing over in the dug-out in the middle of last season when Aidy Boothroyd was sacked. Chairman Jimmy Russo then had to make a decision over the summer about whether to reappoint the former defender when Brendan Rodgers quit for Reading -- or appoint a man with much more experience to take on the jobof gettingWatfordbackintothebig time after two full seasons out of the Premier League. But Russo admits he was swayed by an endorsement from Manchester UnitedmanagerFerguson, whoplayed with Mackays father at Queens Park in Scotland back in the late 1950s and still keeps in touch with the family. Sir Alex rang on another matter but while he was on I asked for his advice and he said Malky was an excellent candidate, Russo explained. Maybehesawsomethingof himself in him. Malky also has a strong char- acter, hes a disciplinarian and his personality is what youre looking for. Sir Alex knows Malkys father so he hadapersonalinsightintotheirfamily. Hejustsaidthatif wewentwithMalky we wouldnt go far wrong and that was good enough for me -- you cant get a better endorsement than that. Mackay will be hoping to open his managerial account with victory tomorrow. New signing Danny Graham, who could cost the Hornetsupto500,000afterthe Football League tribunal ruled on his move from Car- lisle last night, will be handed a full debut. But Russo has warned that Championship clubs risk financial oblivion unless they adapt to the harsh economic climate. The Hornets also struggled to cope with falling out of the top flight and announced operating losses of almost 5m last season, leading to a series of cost-cutting measures, including player sales. And Russo said: I think virtually the whole of football, certainly in the Championship, has taken a reality check. Things are definitely tough.
