Tube: Farringdon booKING Now AS HOTLY tipped five-piece Vagabond took the stage here, the shrieks of teenage girls reached a decibel level one would normally associate with two large jets crashing an inch from your head. By the time singer Alex Vargas, a blatant Michael Hutchence wannabe, began shaking his loins and playing air guitar with the mike stand, oestrogen was dripping from the chandeliers. Anybody over 20, or male, was left asking what possesses major labels to push tepid idea-vacuums like this. The new protgs of Brian Higgins and Xenomania, who have produced their debut album, Vagabond sounded nothing like the sleek pop that stable delivers at its best. They veered between the ersatz soul stylings of Simply Red and Wet Wet Wet and the vanilla soft rock of The Script and James Morrison -- Vagabond recently toured with the latter two. Vagabond may enjoy filling that not entirely original or life-affirming Maroon 5 gap. Yet it was hard to distinguish between songs here, however competent (and crushingly dull) their musicianship. Those not as smitten with the frontman as he is with his reflection spent the evening wishing theyd been invited to a paint- drying exhibition and wondering why Alesha Dixon was present.
