London Lite Monday, 3 August 2009 21 TELEVISION Filmchoice FILM RATINGS excellent very good good average poor KEY (R)repeat (S)subtitles on text service The Matrix ITV1, 10.35pm (1999) beR-StyliSh sci-fi from the Wachowski brothers, the first in a hugely successful trilogy. After ewan McGregor turned down the role, Keanu Reeves, above with Carrie- Anne Moss, was cast as the hi-tech hacker who discovers from a bunch of rebels that he is living in a virtual reality world controlled by computers. hasnt he tried logging on and logging off again? Red Dust BBC1, 11.35pm (2004) GRiPPiNG drama set in South Africa during the truth And Reconciliation hearings. Chiwetel ejiofor plays an MP confronting the security officer who tortured him during apartheid. hilary Swank, above, is ejiofors lawyer who, although playing a South African, explains away her accent by saying she moved to New york long ago. Well, its cheaper than a dialect coach... The Chronicles Of Riddick ITV2, 9pm (2004) it COMeS as rather a shock to see Dame Judi Dench pop up in this weaker sequel to surprise sci-fi blockbuster Pitch black. Vin Diesel, above, reprises his role as Riddick, an intergalactic fugitive (and, mercifully, a man of few words) trying to stop an invading empire which aims to convert or kill everyone in the universe. No pressure, then. The Art Of War ITV4, 10pm (2000) WeSley SNiPeS has to prevent a third World War -- surely easy-peasy when you think that poor old Vin (see above) has the entire universe to protect. Wes, pictured, plays an international security expert who, again like Diesel, is on the run while he ponders how to save humanity. Oh, and hes a buddhist and a martial arts expert. No prizes for guessing which turns out to be the most useful. WENDY SAYERS BBC2 ITV1 Channel 4 Five 10.30 No Place like home?
