Eric Joyce angered ministers by saying test cases to cut payouts to two injured men were profoundly wrong. But MoD sources suggested he might survive as the ministers Parliamentary Private Secretary, to the fury of whips worried about a breakdown in discipline. At the same time, Cabinet minister Peter Hain enraged colleagues by contradicting the Home Secretary over computer hacker Gary McKinnons extradition. Alan Johnson had argued it was fair, but Mr Hain said it is easier to be extradited to America than vice-versa. One minister said: Its impossible to see how Joyce can survive. But another said: It is hard to say he should be sacked if Peter Hain can contradict the Home Secretary without punishment. Mr Joyce said that if the MoD wins a court challenge over the payouts it would be a victory for bureaucracy over bravery. He added: The appeal should be dropped. The MoD last week went to the High Court to contest tribunal rulings that increased the payouts to two soldiers who developed medical complications after treatment for their initial injuries. Mr Joyce said the public gives politicians a lot of rope, but warned: We could find ourselves dangling at the end of it. Newrapecrisis centrestoopenPNEW rape crisis centres are to be opened in London after Boris Johnson was accused of failing to meet his funding promise. During his election campaign, the Mayor offered 2.2m over three years for care of rape victims. But in April he was accused of betraying women after backtracking on the pledge. Now he has promised 375,000 to start a centre in Ealing, 260,000 for the Croydon clinic and two other new centres. PTORY LEADER David Cameron is squaring up for a battle with grass roots Tories in a bid to plant supporters in about 30 plum Conservative seats. He wants nurses, teachers and doctors for the ultra-safe constituencies even if they have little or no experience as party political activists. New selection rules on local parties will also reduce the choice available to local members and give party HQ power to dictate the shortlist. Party chairman Eric Pickles said today he expects about 17 more Tory MPs to quit before the next election in the wake of the expenses scandal. There are 100 Tory associations who have yet to pick candidates, but only 13 are ultra-safe seats where sitting Tory MPs announced they will stand down. Allies say Mr Cameron wants to attract a new breed of MP with community roots rather than the Tory boy caricature of political nerds and PR men. His critics see the move as an attempt to block potential troublemakers, including Right-wing critics. Mr Cameron has long been accused of regarding older Tory MPs as bed- blockers who should be ditched.Selective: Cameron I got a shock when she frowned and her forehead actually wrinkled -- TV mogul Simon CoWeLL is surprised fellow X facTor judge cheryl cole, lefT, doesnT use BoToX like he does Police are here with machine guns, supposed to be protecting us from terrorists, but they end up protecting Ryanair ticket sellers -- TV presenTer DAviD DimBLeBy on Being sTranded aT sTansTed afTer ryanair failed To check passengers on To flighTs in Time She still loves him but is disgusted with his behaviour -- JADe GooDy reVeals To her mum, jackiey, Through a psychic ThaT she isnT happy wiTh husBand jack Tweed Bedding a girl DiSTRiBUTion HeLPLine: If you have any comments about the distribution of London Lite, ring 020 7651 5276, or email On the Tube JOURNEY PLANNER For the easiest way to get around London visit uk and click on Journey Planner London travel information call 020 7222 1234 24-hours Textphone 020 7918 3015 Travel alerts receive free real-time travel info on your mobile or email, subscribe at uk/travelalerts for more information on oyster, visit LU Customer services for inquiries, call 0845 330 9880 between 8am and 8pm daily Congestion charging for payment details call 0845 900 1234 or visit cclondon. com London Travelwatch call 020 7505 9000 or visit londontravel Roadwatch Fulham Road, West Brompton: works at the junction of gunter grove and finborough road.
