Health, beauty & fitness 12 Monday, 3 August 2009 London Lite Askthe pharmacist... heat exhaustion HOT in the City? Bootss pharmacist Angela Chalmers answers your health queries. What causes it? Heat exhaustion occurs when the temperature inside the body rises to between 37C and 40C. When the body is exposed to prolonged high temperatures or dehydration, we sweat to try to reduce its temperature. During very hot weather, the body is unable to cool itself by sweating alone and its levels of water and salt can drop, leading to symptoms including nausea, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, increased heart rate and decreased urine output. Elderly people, infants and those with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, have a higher risk because they produce less sweat. What can I do? Heat exhaustion should be treated promptly to avoid further problems. If you suspect that you are suffering from it, move to a cool place and drink plenty of water. To avoid heat exhaustion, stay out of the sun, drink plenty of fluids, wear a hat and avoid physical exertion. Products to consider: Avene Eau Thermale Water Spray (5.50 for 150ml) can help soothe and hydrate the skin. Lucozade Sport Hydro Active (1.33 for 500ml) provides fast hydration. Boots Rehydration Treatment (2.33 for six sachets) treats dehydration by restoring the bodys natural salt and fluid. tone up all over and burn By Rosalind Ryan Spa report... Hartwell House and Spa W ho hasnt dreamed of floating gracefully through the air on a trapeze? Since seeing Cirque du Soleil a few years ago, Id been dying to have a go -- minus the 100ft drop, naturally. So when I heard about the new Jukari Fit To Fly class I signed up straight away. I would be using a trapeze-like device, called a FlySet, attached to the ceiling to perform a number of jumps, spins and leaps -- just like the performers in the real Cirque du Soleil shows. The workout is designed to boost your heart rate, increase your strength and flexibility, tone your core and make the whole thing fun at the same time. Jukari means to play in Sicilian, explains Lyn heward, creative director of the Reebok-Cirque partnership. Cirque performers have never lost the joy of movement and we wanted to bring that feeling back. Fitness can be playful! Im not convinced, but if model Bar Rafaeli and actress Mischa Barton became fans after just one session, hopefully I will, too. Hanging around ouR lesson takes place in a studio lit with soft red, green and blue lights, while music from the Cirque shows plays in the background. our instructor, Leslie Calvagne, takes us through a few simple stretches and easy moves to warm up and get used to the equipment. And then were off. We start by skipping, pushing the bar away, then reversing so we are pulling it towards us as we skip backwards. Leslie then tells us to add in a small jump called a cat jump. holding on to the FlySet, I swing and attempt a mini-leap into the air and manage to land neatly on both feet. A ripple of excitement passes around my class of six and Leslie can tell were ready to go up another notch. The music and the movements become faster and we are soon doing tuck jumps -- bringing both knees in to your chest. By now Im starting to sweat and my stomach, arms and legs are feeling the burn, too. Throughout the moves, Leslie is constantly encouraging us to pull in our Getfitter withthe swingout sisters...
