BRITISH holidaymakers face a summer of heightened security as Spanish police step up measures amid fears of a terror campaign in tourist resorts. Flights to Majorca were back to nor- mal today after the airport was closed following a bomb attack yesterday lunchtime in which two police officers were killed by a device planted beneath their car in Palmanova. Majorca police immediately closed ports and airports after the attack to prevent the bombers escape. One plane which did manage to leave was carrying members of the Spanish royal family, including Queen Sofia, out of Majorca. Police later deactivated another bomb placed beneath a second police vehicle near the site of the first explosion, said an officer at the scene. Spains Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has ordered the Spanish security services to redouble their efforts against terrorism. It is thought the device that exploded was a limpet bomb activated as the two officers got into their car. Basque separatist group Eta is suspected of carrying out the attack outside offices of the Civil Guard paramilitary police. An 11-year-old British boy saw the charred body of an officer being pulled from the wreckage of the car. Mitchell Van Dijk was lounging by a nearby pool with his father Peter, brother Cameron and Maureen Mitchell, 34, Mr Van Dijks partner. Ms Mitchell said: Suddenly there was a massive bang. Everyone was panicking. It came a day after a car bomb, also blamed on Eta, injured 60 at a police barracks in northern Spain. Holidaymakers at Gatwick airport last night spoke of their fear of f u r t h e r t e r r o r a t t a c k s i n Majorca. Passengers said they felt nervous about jetting out to the popular tourist hub.
