BigSur THE next day we drove along Big Sur, an epic stretch of coast road that looks like a set for Top Gear. After stopping at numerous vista points we lunched at Lucia, overlooking a plunging cliff that sank towards aquamarine water -- you can sometimes spot whales while you sip your beer. The epic scenery is as sparkly as the stars that frequent the area -- Brad Pitt is rumoured to be house-hunting here, while Courtney Cox-Arquette and Reese Witherspoon are regular visitors. SanFran THERE was one more driving experience to tick off -- San Franciscos Golden Gate bridge. Sadly the famous fog swept in for the day and all we could see was the vast cables disappearing into cloud -- we couldnt even see the bay below. Instead, we checked into the Adagio hotel on Geary Street (jdvhotels.com). I ran to Nordstrums for an extensive retail fix, and in the evening we caught the tram to the Wharf and dined at McCormick & Kuletos (mccormickandkuletos.com) overlooking the bay -- we could just about see Alcatraz as we tucked into seafood. Over our second bottle of ros we started plotting our next road trip -- there was talk of driving from San Francisco to Colorado but, on reflection, I think that the open road had gone to our heads.
