It was, not coincidentally, booked solid for nine months. While no one could call Rob Ashfords revival lewd, it does awaken the brilliant nastiness of Williamss writing. Set in raffishly rickety Forties new Orleans, it depicts a collision of the archaic Southern refinements of Blanche DuBois -- a boozy tangle of disappointments, pretensions and fragile charm -- and her brother-in-law Stanley Kowalskis crude, industrial view of life when she stays at the home he shares with her sister, Stella. Richly portraying the tension between dark male impulses and feminine poise, it shows as well the destructiveness of desire. elliot Cowans Stanley is throbbing with sinewy machismo and Ruth Wilsons Stella is sensitively imagined, but the key is Rachel Weisz who proves mesmerising. Showing her range as she shifts between sultry flirtiness, fevered reminiscence and squawky hysteria, her interpretation of Blanche is compellingly intelligent. I dont want realism, I want magic, she declares. This production has both, and makes Streetcar seem a resonantly modern tragedy. Resonant: Rachel Weisz and ElliotCowan IN TowN lAsT NIGHT...
