The TaxPayers Alliance said a new 25-a-night allowance was open to abuse and far more generous than what private firms offered employees. MPs can claim the cash for each night they spend away from home on parliamentary business. For most that is every night while the Commons is sitting. Falklands war veteran Simon Weston, who was badly injured in the 1982 conflict, led public outrage at the Governments bid to limit pay-outs on the day soldiers killed in action are repatriated. It seems awful, he said. Its almost car crash politics. He challenged Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth to defend the decision to oppose compensation given to two soldiers. The Ministry of Defence is appealing against large increases in the pay-outs. Light Dragoon Anthony Duncan, who walks on crutches after being shot in Iraq, was originally awarded 9,250, increased to 46,000 by an appeal tribunal. Royal Marine Matthew McWilliams fractured his thigh in a military exercise. His 8,250 award was increased to 28,750. At the Court of Appeal today the Government launched its legal attempt to claw back cash from wounded soldiers by claiming it only intended to be fair and consistent. Nathalie Lieven QC, representing the MoD, said the case of Corporal Duncan and Marine McWilliams is a crucial test of compensation in future. Ms Lieven told the court the conclusion of the tribunal which made the awards had been erroneous. I love sickos.
