Tube: North greenwich WHEN Audrey Tautou fixes you with her huge, saucer-like eyes its impossible not to be entranced. Shes so tiny shes like a precious porcelain doll youd be terri- fied of touching in case you broke her. But dont let the gamine features fool you. The 32-year-old is no wilting flower. Since she came to fame as enchanting Amlie seven years ago shes refused to play safe, turning down a string of Hollywood movies she wont name and only signing on for The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons because she thought theyd be a laugh to do. Coco Chanel, the feminist fashion designer she plays in Coco Before Chanel, is a better fit. I dont know if I really look like her, she says, but she wouldnt compromise and Im the same. Running around as sidekick to Tom Hanks aside, shes been true to her word. Shes only made three English-language films (the third one was Stephen Frears Dirty Pretty Things) and still lives in France, where she was raised by her dentist father and her teacher mother. Little Audreys childhood dream was to be a primatologist and study mon- keys -- Im crazy about them, she says with a heart-melting smile -- but she settled on acting and studied at the Cours Florent drama school in Paris. Tautou has since specialised in playing strong-willed characters probably because Im like that in real life. That said, she was happy to shake off Chanel when filming was finished. To leave this character has been a relief, she confesses. I couldnt go on set feeling shy, I had to be the boss, and I had to carry her toughness with me -- her anger, her suffering, her pride, her arrogance and desire for success. That was a heavy weight to carry on my shoulders. Shes unsure what her next project will be, but she doesnt want to repeat herself, so I guess that rules out Amlie 2? She laughs. There are more interesting and challenging things to do. Some people will always think of me as Amlie and Im grateful to her, but I want to do lots of completely different characters. I dont want to be bored.
