BORED with bourgeois British festivals? Then Burning Man could be the fest for you. Held in the windswept Black Rock Desert in Nevada, it draws a crowd of 50,000 hedonists for what the organisers describe as an experi- ment in temporary community dedi- cated to radical self-expression. So a bit different to V, then? From 31 August to 7 September a temporary encampment known as Black Rock City will mushroom out of the flat plain, put together by volunteers who stay there for several weeks before and after the event. The festi- val culmi- nates i n t h e burning of artworks (submarines, gigantic ducks, fire- breathing thistles, grandfather clocks and balsa wood temples to name but a few past pieces) and effigies, the most eagerly awaited being the eponymous Burning Man. After the burn, the real raving starts. But unlike your aver- age festival, there are no headline acts, no booked musicians. You bring your own instruments and sound systems and get going yourself. The meaning and the purpose of the festival is open to interpretation. Some say its about the destruction of the ego, others that its a ritual act of cleansing. Make of it what you will... BED DOWN ITS strictly BYO when it comes to accommodation (and everything else). Make sure your tent is sturdy -- it gets extremely windy at night. REFUEL THE sale of products and services is prohibited, so you must bring what you need. Its the desert, so one and a half litres of water a day are recom- mended. You are, however, allowed to barter and share. The organisers say: Confront your own survival. This is not a consumer event. Eek. So remember to stock up! HOW TO GET THERE THERE are no direct flights from the UK to Reno, the nearest airport, a two- hour drive away. Return flights to Reno from Heathrow via Dallas, arriving on 31 August, leaving 7 September, are 503.30 (American Airlines, americanairlines.co.uk).
