MEMBERS of the public are to get to play a renowned London music venue. Former Talking Heads singer David Byrne is to turn Camdens Grade II-listed Roundhouse into a giant musical instrument for an interactive sound installation called Playing The Building. Devices will be attached to metal beams, pillars and pipes to make them generate sound to be channelled down to a keyboard which visitors will be invited to play. Playing The Building drew vast crowds in New Yorks Battery Maritime Building last year and at the Frgfabriken building in Stockholm in 2005. Byrne, 57, said of the concept: Thinking how girders vibrate when a truck or a train goes over a metal bridge, it seemed just a matter of working out the mechanics. Playing The Building runs from 8-31 August at the Roundhouse. Amandeep Kaur Grewal, who is of Indian origin, was singled out for unfair criticism and treatment by trainer WPC Lucinda Rigby because of her race at the Metropolitan Polices training school in Hendon. When Mrs Grewal com- plained, WPC Rigby told her other students were laughing at her. Mrs Grewal, 38, told how some fellow recruits treated her in a less than friendly fashion. Reading employment tribunal heard how another trainer had to hold a diversity class to deal with animosity towards Mrs Grewal. The panel rejected the Mets claim that trainers had considered her skills to be poor compared with other students. It found she had been unfairly targeted and said WPC Rigbys remark about col- leagues making fun of her was inappropriate and hurtful. It found the Met guilty of race and religious discrimination, but dis- missed a harassment claim. Mrs Grewal, of Teddington, is now a WPC at Kingston police station. A Scotland Yard spokes- m a n s a i d : T h e Metropolitan Police Service will give full and careful consideration to the decision. PC Grewal remains a valued member of the force. THOUSANDS of activists are set to hold a climate camp protest at a secret location next month. Activist Natalie Swift said the Camp For Climate Action will seize the site in a flash-mob swoop on 27 August using texting, Twitter and Facebook. Ms Swift revealed the site is inside the M25 but would not say exactly where. The Mets policing of the event will be under scrutiny after the controversy of Aprils G20 protests.
