LITESPORT London Lite Monday, 20 July 2009 35 EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR today insisted he didnt jump ship from Arsenal to cash-rich Manchester City for the money. The 25-year-old finally sealed a 25mtransferafteragreeingafour- year deal worth 150,000-a-week -- nearly double his deal at the Emirates Stadium. But as City splashed out on yet another striker -- they had eight at the last count -- Adebayor said it wastheGunnersfailuretowinany silverware since the FA Cup in 2005 that prompted him to join Mark Hughess Abu Dhabi-backed revolution. People who think that I have joined City for the money are wrong, he said. If I had made a move for that reason then I would have been playing for Barcelona or Milan last season. They gave me bigger offers than Arsenal did for me to stay. I want to win trophies. That is my ambition. The team has got quality and a manager who knows what he wants and is a nice guy. This morning the official Arsenal website, Arsenal.com, still carried a headline saying Wenger: Ade- bayor deal could happen Saturday nightbutthis picture, right, shows ex-GunnerBrianMarwoodoversee- ing the signing on Saturday afternoon. And as far back as May, we suggested Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had decided t o s e l l h i s To g o l e s e goal-getter. Adebayor, who endured an infamous on-field fall-out with Danishteam-mateNick- las Bendtner, can expect a similarly rough ride from fellow City new boy Roque Santa C r u z , w h o moved to East- lands for 17m from Blackburn Rovers. As Adebayor (below) prepared to join the tour to SouthAfrica--whereCitysuffered an embarrassing 2-0 defeat against local side Orlando Pirates on Satur- day, Santa Cruz warned: Every- body was very excited about what was happening with him because he is a great player. But everyone will have to fight for their place, work harder and give their best in every training session. Wenger is expected to step up his search for a replacement this week with Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh remaining at the top of alistthatincludesKlaasJanHunte- laarof RealMadridandSenegalese forward Demba Ba. Chamakh is keen on a move to Arsenal but has been offered a much improved contract by the Ligue 1 club on his current deal which has one year left to run. The good news for Arse- nal over the weekend was the return of Czech mid- fielderTomasRosickyafteran 18-monthhamstringinjury. The Czech midfielder played the first half of Saturdays 2-2 draw at Barnet and Wenger confessed: There was a time when I was wor- r i e d T o m a s wouldnt play football again and he felt the same.
