T HIS summer the high street has been awash with every possible pattern you can think of, from florals to tribal prints and even bold graphics. Great for variety, but if all these strong prints have given you a headache, then the seasons colour blocking trend is the perfect antidote. More interesting than just going head-to-toe in one shade, the theory is that you either clash or match your colours in blocks. Working best with bold, primary colours, we fell in love with the look when we spotted it at the spring Richard Nicoll show. His preferred colours were fuchsia pink paired with tangerine and flashes of nude on dresses, tank tops and even trouser suits. Jonathan Saunders went for fabulous party frocks in vibrant colour combinations, while Lanvins take on the trend was more subtle, with combos of subdued black, navy, pink and red. Ideally, the colour should be in blocks over one item of clothing -- our favourite way to wear the trend is with two-tone dresses. Check out Irwin & Jordan for jersey and silk versions (from 99). Erotokritos has a super- slinky blush pink and black cowl- neck dress (330), plus lots of other two-tone treats in brighter tones. Try River Island and Topshop for pocket-friendly versions. River Islands bandage-style bodycon dress (24.99) works well in orange, pink and purple, while Topshops two-tone dress in white with aqua, fuchsia or red (45) is a fresh alternative. Skirts work the trend well, too. Topshop has a fab grey and fuchsia skirt (32), or for edgier looks, try Markus Lupfer at asos.com where monochrome corset-look tees are 125. Of course, you dont have to colour block on one single item of clothing. Create your own look from y o u r e x i s t i n g wardrobe. Pair a silk cami with another one- colour pair of trou- sers or skirt, or if you have a block colour dress, add a contrasting cardi to achieve that bold, two-tone look. I t s h i p t o b e blocky. Okay, we were on a plane with 300 other people and he was a couple of rows away, but it wasnt half difficult to concentrate on my book -- I re- read the same page eight times. He was dressed in a berry-coloured hoodie by new eco-friendly label Ascension, which made me feel cool as I was wearing my new turquoise one from the same brand (45, adili.com). Check out their new Essentials collection.
