Tube: Old St JANUARY JONES has a dream role. I want to be in my trench coat reporting live from an alien abduction site. Which might be a surprise to viewers of Mad Men, where the 31-year-old actress is perfect as put-upon Betty, faithful Sixties housewife to Jon Hamms unfaithful ad exec Don Draper. People come up to me and say Poor Betty and I have to convince them Im a very happy person with a nice life, she laughs. Nor would you ever find the currently single Jones in domestic ser- vitude. I dont understand Betty. If something isnt going my way or I feel trapped in a situation I will get out. Its hard for me to understand how she can put on a smile and be the happy housewife. Betty is a plum role for an actress who was slumming it in the likes of the American Pie spin-off American Wedding and Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. The Boat That Rocked is another dud on her CV, but she loved reuniting with Richard Curtis after her small role in Love, Actually. Being at sea wasnt as much fun because I got so queasy. Back on dry land, shes now in Manhattan filming the third series of the best show on TV (and no, thats not open for discussion). She hints at a juicy storyline when she says: I dont think Betty can do it for much longer. I think shes going to start to crack. Born and raised in South Dakota, Jones is a child of the Eighties but shes comfortable in Sixties fashions. Even the waist-strangling girdle. You have to learn to breathe differently but it really helps with the role. The way you walk and wiggle is different. The stock- ings, garter belts and pointy bras help, too. I look in the mirror and Im like, Oh, theres Betty. The programmes rampant sexism is typical of the period, but Jones reckons little has changed. There are still office innuendos. It might be two guys saying something like Nice ass behind your back. She must get that a lot? She laughs. Maybe, but at least in the Sixties they said it to your face.
