Barrister Chamali Fernando, 30, from Finchley, ran as the Lib-Dem candidate for mayor of London but was defeated by Brian Paddick in 2007. Her brother Chandila, 32, is also leaving the Lib-Dems to join the Conservatives. The business developer failed last year in his bid to become Lib-Dem president. Tory leader mr Cameron said: I am delighted to welcome Chamali and Chandila to the Conservative Party. It is very pleasing that two people who have played such an active role at the highest level in the Liberal Democrats have decided we are the only party that can deliver the change our country needs. The Tories highlighted that the Fernandos come from a strong Liberal family. They said the pairs father, Sumal Fernando, was the first Sri Lankan to contest a parliamentary seat in the UK, for the SDP in Leicester West in 1983, and he later stood for the Liberal Alliance in nottingham north in 1987. Chamali, who was born in Sri Lanka, first campaigned for the Liberal Democrats at the age of six, and was a member of the party for 20 years. The four 48-hour stoppages on national expesss east Anglia (nXeA) services into Liverpool Street will be on Thursdays and Fridays on 30 and 31 July, and 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 August. Unions rmT and Aslef, which represent most of the drivers and station staff, joined forces to order the strikes over pay and conditions. rmT leader Bob Crow said nXeA offered peanuts to staff despite 500million profits in the past decade. The firm said it offered above-inflation pay rises. DAVID Cameron will try to block Tony Blairs attempts to become eU president. Conservative mPs are aghast at the idea that the former Labour leader could soon be installed at the helm of the eU. If by some chance he was a candidate, yes we would block him, said a source. We did not spend a decade fighting the man to suddenly want to see him in the presidents spot. Shadow foreign secretary William Hague warned: Any holder is likely to try to centralise power for themselves in Brussels and dominate national foreign policies. In the hands of an operator as ambitious as Tony Blair, that is a near certainty. He should be let nowhere near the job. If the eU Treaty is ratified this year, a leading politician may be elected to the post before the next general election is held in Britain.
