Dont bother. But if Dan Clark, right, doing a no-holds- barred retread of Rik Mayalls vain idiot persona works for you (it does for me) there are laughs to be had here. Tonight Clarks Don, a man with no redeeming features, loses his job and his grandma on the same day. But he does inherit a house, complete with three types of alphabet spaghetti (Roman, Hellenic and Japanese). File under cult. Monday Monday ITV1, 9pm oH DeaR. The office set the standard for recent British sitcom, but this work-based comedy doesnt even faintly echo its forebears success. Fay Ripley plays Christine, HR manager of a supermarket chain. Her long-suffering Pa, Sally, has to contend with her bosss alcoholism (endless laughs, not) and the fickle ways of men (bar pick-up turns out to work at the office -- never saw that coming). Then along comes a scary new boss to possibly sack the lot. Youd like to think that might include the writers. as for the cast, its probably best to leave this one off the CV. B ob Hoskins might just be the british Robert De niro -- not the looks, but for sheer fizzing energy, intensity and killer eyes -- and he lights up tonights opening episode of T h e s t r e e t w i t h u t t e r conviction and brilliance as Paddy, a pub landlord and a hero for our times. now back for a third series, writer Jimmy McGoverns show boasts a deceptively simple formula. The characters are all neighbours on a street in the north, just like a soap opera, except each week we follow a single story, hinging on one protagonists dilemma. Paddys predicament springs from a small moment but has the makings of a tragedy. TheStreets ahead: Bob Hoskins and Timothy Spall star EastEnders BBC1, 8pm aRCHie (Larry Lamb, right) has quickly re-established himself as a force for trouble in the Square. He takes heart on learning that Peggy still has her wedding ring, but Phil has got wind of archies return and he doesnt like it. also, the divorce papers have finally come through for Stacey, but can she sign them? threatens Paddy with a clatter- ing if he wont relent. Hoskinss man appeals for support but its little surprise (especially if youve seen the classic western High noon) when the locals dont rush forward to help. Loyal Eddie (Timothy spall) does stick by his pal, but sadly his courage is matched by his feeble lack of fighting skills. Were torn between admira- tion for Paddys ideals and sympathy for Paddys wife Lizzie (Frances barber, a model of tight-lipped restraint) who wants to wake up the next day and find her husband still alive. McGovern pushes each scene to its limits but always keeps it real, never quite crossing over into hysteria, and he splices humour and horror seamlessly. This is drama of rare raw power, and the ending will smack you upside the head to unforgettable effect. 11.00 To Buy or not To Buy (R,S). 11.30 Trash To Cash (S); BBC news; Weather. 12.15 Cash in The attic (R,S). 1.00 BBC news; Weather (S). 1.30 Regional news and Weather (S). 1.45 Doctors (S). 2.15 Diagnosis Murder (R,S). a murdered mans last words intrigue Dr Sloan. 3.00 BBC news; Weather; Regional news (S). 3.05 nuzzle and Scratch (R,S). 3.25 Bear Behaving Badly (R,S). 3.50 League of Super evil (S); Thumb Wrestling Federation: TWF. 4.05 Best of Friends (R,S). 4.35 Mi High (R,S). 5.00 newsround (S). 5.15 Weakest Link (S). 6.00 BBC News (S); Weather. 6.30 BBC Regional News (S); Weather. 7.00 The One Show (S). adrian Chiles and Christine Bleakley present reports on issues affecting people around the Uk. 7.30 Doms On The Case (R,S).
