IN&OUTTONIGHT 22 Thursday, 9 July 2009 London Lite FASHION SPY By Louise Roe FIVEFAB occasion hats W HETHER youre in a rush to leave the house or you simply cant be bothered to shave your legs, the best solution for looking stylish while also staying cool this summer is the maxi dress. It has been a summer staple for the past few years and its popularity doesnt look to be waning any time soon. A veritable armada of maxis floated down the spring/sum- mer 2009 catwalks and theyve been spotted on celebrities ranging from Kate Moss and Keira Knightley to Angelina Jolie. So whats the secret of its perennial success? Well, its super-flattering, floor-sweeping silhouette hides a multitude of sins -- from lumps and bumps to sunburn. Its also the per- fect wardrobe item to take you through beach-bound mornings, afternoon strolls and on to evening parties. If youre tempted to ex- periment with this seasons vibrant colours and prints, the flowing lines of the maxi also make a great canvas. The key to rocking the trend in the urban jungle, as our Street Style girls are well aware, is to pair it with flats, flip-flops or gladiators and keep accessories to a minimum. On the high street, Monsoon has a variety of prints (starting at 60). We love its strapless ver- sions, which work just as well on a Caribbean holiday as they do in London. Next also has a great selec- tion of patterned maxis which come in animal prints and boho styles. For a gorgeous Paisley print version head to Mango and pick up Penlope Cruzs design for 85. Asos.com is another reliable one-stop shop with styles rang- ing from basic black to casual halternecks, which are perfect for festivals. Its cotton bow strap dress (19.75) works for day or evening. And if the good ol British summer doesnt live up to its early promise, dont panic. The billowing folds which somehow magically manage to keep you cool when its hot, also keep you warm when its not. Just watch out for rain -- puddles and trailing hemlines dont mix.
