LITESPORT 34 Monday, 6 July 2009 London Lite TERRY WILL BENew boss Ancelotti wont let City get their man BY NEAL COLLINS THE GREATS of tennis were lining up at Wimbledon to applaud Roger Federer after his incredible 15th grand slam. But there was one sporting legend who actually broke off in the middle of a game to pass on his congratulations. Shortly after Federer beat Andy Roddick, Tiger Woods sent the Swiss a text message. I think it was 14-all when we were all on the putting green, and then I went to the range and I heard that he had held and then he broke to win, said Woods. He told reporters he sent the simple message great job. Now its my turn, before he teed off and went on to win the AT&T National tournament by a stroke. Woods said he and good friend Federer occasionally prod each other along with a competitive banter of text messages. Last month Federer won his first French Open, while Woods won the Memorial Tournament, at about the same time. He won the French and I won Memorial, so it was kind of lets do it on the same day, lets do it again today, Woods said. His (wins) are a hell of a lot bigger than mine, though. He won two slams and I won two tour events. Hopefully I can get the majors now. Another keen Federer fan, Pete Sampras, took his place in the Royal Box just after the match had started. He was keeping a promise he made to be at court-side when Federer claimed the new record of 15 slam wins and said: Hes won 15 now, hes going to win a few more. In my book hes the greatest. BY GEOFF TEATHER Inbrief Strife begins at 40m for Cesc ARSENAL are preparing for a fight to keep Cesc Fabregas by slapping a 40m price-tag on him. Real Madrid and Barcelona are expected to battle it out for the Spanish midfielders services and though Arsenal are keen for him to stay at the Emirates, there could come a point when it is impossible to turn down the money. One source said: If Arsenal are offered 40m there will be enormous pressure to sell. Spurs and Villa on their marks SWEDISH Under-21 striker Marcus Berg is at the centre of a Premiership tug-of-war. Tottenham and Aston Villa are going head-to-head to land the services of the player who is valued at 10m. His manager at Groningen, Hans Nijland, said: There is serious interest from two clubs. Villa could look to Berg as a replacement for John Carew, who has been linked to Spurs. Its Capello the problem solver FABIO CAPELLO believes he has overcome Englands lack of confidence and their Wembley wobble. The team has a 100 percent record in competitive games since he took over and he told fifa.com: When we started the problem was Wembley. The problem was no confidence. The problem was the group. There were a lot of problems, but Ive been working on these things and the result has been okay so far. Mr Modesty dives in again CRISTIANO RONALDO believes the Spanish Primera Division will leave the Premiership standing this season. His new side, Real Madrid, have taken the transfer market by storm over the last month after agreeing deals for him, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Raul Albiol. The Premier League is a very good competition, but I think that the Spanish league is going to have a little more quality because of the players that are arriving, he said. We have Franz in high places FIFA committee member Franz Beckenbauer has tentatively backed Englands bid to host the World Cup, claiming the country could stage footballs showpiece event tomorrow. Beckenbauer sits on the board that will decide who will host the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. NEW Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti nearly brought the house down in his firstpressconferenceatStamfordBridge this morning, when he told the worlds media: I dont know if John Terry will be captain next season. With Manchester City reported to be trying to lure the England centre-back north for a record salary of 200,000-a- week, there was an astonished gasp. Then Ancelotti, in halting English, added: Naturally I like to joke in the press conference. He will be the captain. He is the symbol of Chelsea. He said that he wants to stay forever in the Chelsea (sic) and we want to keep him forever. Now there is a question for Man- chester City, the price. But for Terry there is no price. Terry will be cap- tain of Chelsea forever. He said he want to stay, there is no problem, for him, for us. The story continues Chelsea and Terry. Then former AC Milan boss Ancelotti, who won eight trophies in eight sea- sons at the San Siro with a highly-experienced squad, paid Terry the ultimate compliment, comparing him to Italian le g end Paulo Maldini.
