Wednesday 2nd September O2 Shepherds Bush Empire www.o2shepherdsbushempire.co.uk 0844 477 2000 / 0871 230 5595 / kililive.com A Kilimanjaro presentation PEOPLE who dislike musicals often complain they are pretentious and overhyped -- but its these vices that inspire Gerard Alessandrinis satirical revue. Its present version, freshened up by director Phillip George, rattles along, burlesquing the potty- mouthed puppetry of Avenue Q, Sarah Brightmans soaring vocals and the sultry excesses of one- note Liza Minnelli. Theres also room for digs at the Meniers own hits A Little Night Music and -- in a joyous singalong finale -- La Cage Aux Folles. The parodies are hardly subtle but their details are cannily observed. And they are mostly very funny -- Les Mis is sent up without mercy, but there is a core of reverence beneath the lampooning. The four performers show fine versatility, especially Anna-Jane Casey, while Alvin Colts costumes ensure laughs before a notes been sung. Forbidden Broadway should be another success for this Southwark powerhouse. Until 13 Sept (020 7907 7060). Mostamusingmusicals Pots of fun: the costumes get laughs of their own IN TowN LAST NIGHT...
