Hes the coolest guy on the planet and, as his role as gangster John Dillinger in Michael Manns Public Enemies proves, the best actor in the business. Not that Depp is a fan of his own work. If I can avoid the mirror when I brush my teeth in the morning, I will, he says, admitting he never watches his movies. I find security and safety in the most profound degree of ignorance. The fact he avoids mirrors explains the outfit -- an ill-fitting waistcoat over an unironed shirt -- but he carries it off with the same flair he brought to characters such as Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd and Jack Sparrow, the Keith Richards-inspired pirate of the Caribbean who made him an interna- tional star and very wealthy man. For the better part of 20 years I was defined as box office poison, says Depp, scratching his goatee. Then that little film came round and I thought Yeah, that would be fun. I created the character the same way I created all my other characters and nearly got fired, but thank God I didnt because it changed my life. Im super-thankful but its not like I went out of my way to make it happen. The actor, who lives in Paris with singer/model Vanessa Paradis, their daughter Lily-Rose and son Jack, looks a good decade younger than his 46 years and puts that down to clean living. Avoid wine and liquor, dont smoke, stay in your room and watch reality television. Thats how I do it. Behind his dark glasses theres a bright glint in his eyes. Hes fibbing about the booze and ciggies and when would Depp have time to watch reality TV? Hes putting the finishing touches to Tim Burtons Alice In Wonderland, in which he plays the Mad Hatter, and revisiting Hunter S Thompson. And his dream role? Playing Carol Channing, he deadpans, referencing the madcap musical comedy star. In the digital age, anything is possible. I could play a 12- year-old girl at this point. No doubt hed do it brilliantly.
