London Lite Tuesday, 30 June 2009 19 Sporty spark: Helen was attracted by Curtiss love of sport, design and travel U NTIL now the longest Id been with anyone in the past two years was six weeks. Ive now been seeing Leanne for a bit longer than that and am just about happy to use the G word. Were having lots of fun, and so are my friends -- with all the banter. Daftest is my mate T. He thinks its hilarious to keep telling me to propose to Leanne via this column. Thanks T, I really dont know where Id be without you. Then theres Ross. I wanted to introduce Leanne to him and his wife Lara. Why? he said, Is she pregnant? Still, he did arrange a barbecue at their house. My mate Charlie came with his girlfriend Sherradan, so Leanne now had to meet four of my good friends. In fact it went very smoothly, even when the four took turns firing questions at Leanne. But then they brought up my sisters, Rachel and Sarah. Now Im lucky to have two lovely siblings that all my mates like. But Ross and Charlie didnt emphasise the good points. They pretended the two are scarily protective of their only brother. I tried to tell Leanne theyre lying but I couldnt get a word in edge- ways. Just when I thought the worst was over, Ross reached out to pour me some red wine but knocked over a full glass, spilling it all over Leanne. He was mortified, but luckily she reacted only by laughing at him for being so clumsy. The next day Ross said he liked Leanne but that she didnt laugh loudly enough at his jokes. Like me, she probably didnt realise hed told any. I picked his Chelsea place, Marco (Fulham Road, SW6, 020 7915 2929), and invited my girlfriend to sample his culinary delights. The restaurant is at Chelsea football ground beside the Millennium Hotel. Marcos design is pure New York chic with its luxurious circular booths and a gold glitter column, complete with risqu prints on the walls. The menu was printed on one side of a card separated into appetisers, fish, meat and desserts. Best of all, it was full of all the dishes I love like sea bass, belly pork, great chips and Eton mess. My date started with the cocktail oyster prunier, a martini glass filled with spicy tomato juice and stuffed with oysters (9.95), which I insisted on sampling. She had a halibut for main course (22.50) while I was in heaven with my rib eye of Aberdeen Angus lescargot with herbs and sauce barnaise (19.95). With a glass of champagne and a zesty lemon tart (8.50) to finish we had a luxury experience -- and not a raised voice to be heard from the kitchen. STEVE, SHEPHERDS BUSH proved a great icebreaker. It was good getting to know each other by having some fun and some banter rather than just hours of serious conversation. We played for about 45 minutes. I think Helen has quite a competitive streak, but thats not a bad thing. For dinner, we shared bruschetta for starter, she had chicken with cherry tomatoes for her main course and I had steak. We had a lot in common with our love for travel but were also very thinking of new challenges. It was quite late when we left, about 11.30, so we had spent a good four and half hours together but it went very quickly. There was flirting during the night and we exchanged numbers, although there was no kissing. Weve texted a few times since so there is a good chance well meet up again. Weve been to completely different places. Shes very sporty and thats a good thing as I am as well. She cycles lots to work and thats what I do too. Im a designer and I also DJ most Friday nights. Helen is quite creative and seems to know what she wants to do with her life, so I was surprised shes doing a banking job. Was he having an online affair, I wondered? Or was he just into some strange form of pornography he wasnt ready to share with me yet. What are you looking at? I demanded as the tapping of fingers on a keyboard woke me at 4am for the second night in a row. I hadnt made out the words on the screen before he slapped it closed. Nothing, he muttered, honestly. Well if its nothing, I countered, why wont you tell me? The possibilities were making me nervous. I was determined to find out what was going on, so the next morning, as he was showering, I snatched up his laptop and launched my own investigation. There was little time, so with a trembling hand I went straight for the history button and there it was in plain view. At 4.33am on Thursday, James had been perving at... a scuba tank? How odd, but as I thought about it I remembered him mentioning scuba diving the first time wed met. I heard the water stop and had to slam the laptop closed and pretend to be engrossed in my book. Hi babe, I said casually, my face burning a telltale scarlet. He may have outwitted me this time, but Im pretty sure there was more to his midnight surfing than met the eye. aat...pervingbeenhad ALICE VON SIMSON My heart sank at 4am surf sessions Abarrelfulofbanter to welcome my girl heWhy?Lara.wife sheIssaid, heStill, pregnant? barbecueaarrangedid mateMyhouse.theirat hiswithcameCharlie index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html28.html29.html30.html31.html32.html33.html34.html35.html
