Cardio tennis, a regime invented in the US, is one such combo exercise class thats making waves in London. its a cocktail of tennis and aerobics, with a dash of circuit training thrown in for good measure. And with Wimblemania sweeping the city, what better time to get on to a court? inspired by the antics in SW19, i pulled on my tennis whites and sweatbands to give it a go... Howitworks The david Lloyd tennis clubs started offering cardio tennis classes to its members two months ago -- esporta health Clubs also run classes -- and i went to the david Lloyd raynes Park centre to have a go. held in the clubs domed tennis bubble just outside the main building, there were 19 of us in the class, a range of ages from teens to people in their mid-forties, and of differing abilities. Some of us had the intensity, skills and shots of roger Federer; others were a bit more Anna Kournikova -- not too fussed about the tennis, just worried about looking good. We started with a warm-up that involved jogging up and down two courts a few times, followed by some simulated volleys and smashes (without the racket) to get us going. Next it was time to get down to the cardio part of proceedings (with the racket), which basically means running almost constantly while tennis balls are fired at you -- its like a very intense, compressed game at Wimbledon, except with even more dashing about. Thedrills We SPLiT into two teams and the instructor talked us through some simple drills. The first one was easy -- he hit a ball to us at the baseline and, after hitting it back, we ran up to the net and returned a volley.
